Summer Plan Page

The story of a couple living on the island for the duration of the summer 2003.

Our Story:

Photo Gallery so far.

Having been made redundant some time ago, I decided to put a permanent job on hold for a while to wait till the summer of 2003 when Gem finished univeristy so we could spent an indefinate length holiday here. It has taken a couple of months to plan and prepare for this. We both live in West London having attended Brunel university. Gems father owns the island has been there for a weeks holiday for all but 1 year since she was born. I myself have stayed on the island 3 times now over the last couple of years and the experience makes us never want to leave. That is why we intend to live there for approximately 3 months. We may leave early, we may stay longer. It all depends if were are bored, skint or just plain had enough of each other!

We've now been here 3 months and don't want to leave yet. In the past when I have stayed on Fladda we have lived by just using candle light. There is an old wind generator here which we got running again for lighting and powering phone chargers and a laptop. It's not quite sufficient to power the mini fridge we brought along but all the food we buy stays ok in the cupboard. We got the gas boiler for the shower and hot water tap working for a while but now don't bother now as it uses quite a lot of gas - besides, Graham has still not has a wash/shower indoors yet as he has so far managed all of them in the sea no matter what the weather!

Want to read diary of our stay which is being updated continually whilst we are here? Click Diary.

A lot of the time we play cards and board games as we try to avoid watching tv, and also the weather sometimes means we are stuck inside quite a lot. It's aslo fun. Check out the current score tally board!

Some other excursions from the island we would like to do but have yet to plan them or pick a date for are:

  • Visit Edinburgh.
  • Get to the top of Ben Nevis (always missed our other chances when in the area).
  • Visit some of the other lighthouses (preferably ones where visitors are allowed inside).
  • Go to the Lighthouse museum in Fraserburgh, near Aberdeen.
  • Spend a night camping on neighbouring island Bel-na-hua.

We have been doing some minor work getting the front garden back into shape. The grass within the sea walled garden is a bit beyond easy recovery, and pretty much the whole building and walls will need painting. In the past it has been applied using wheelbarrows as the pot and garden brooms as the brushes.
